CYBERSPACE REPORT - 8 February 19th 1998 Bill Weber LOCAL TEENAGER WINS PRIZES USING INTERNET Adam Shisler, 13 year old son of Mr. & Mrs. James Shisler of Tomah has used the technology of the Internet to be the first, on three occasions, to find the answers to questions in a daily contest sponsored on Radio WCOW. Adam, is a 7th grade, Scholastic Honor Roll student at the Tomah Middle School . He has never had any computer classes in school as yet but is learning to type using a computer in Mr. Spaids class. When asked about where he learned his computer skills? Adam said, " I learned most about computers by playing with our computer at home. I have been using the computer for about four years and have been using the internet for about a year." In order not to jeopardize Adams secrets on how he uses the Internet to find the answers to the questions asked, we will only say that his favorite search engine is "Webcrawler" and that he is a whiz at finding the information. Having won three $10.00 prizes within the past four months. Adam does not plan on going into computers as a career. "I just use the computer for fun now." He also shares that fun on a daily basis with three other members of his family.. When he is not having fun on the computer he says, "I like sports" His e-mail address is: > shislerj@mwt.net < Congratulations Adam. I am amazed at the technical skills young people such as Adam have been able to pick up and learn on their own. I have a grandson, Joseph Lynch, who is a student at Belleville, Wisconsin Middle school and is also 13 years old.. He developed and put up my WEB page as well as his own at: >http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Heights/6043/main.html< Most of his information he gathered from programs on the WEB. He is now taking computer "programming" at his school. and is interested in becoming a computer programmer as a career. His e-mail address is: cybergeek@itis.com. in case you want to know more about putting up your own WEB site OLYMPICS http://www.nagano.olympic.org/ TO SEND E-MAIL TO ANY ATHLETE: http://wkbt.cbsnow.com/navbar/cbscom.html I am not much of a sports fan but I do enjoy watching the Olympics, where the very best youth of all nations compete on a peaceful and fun loving basis. The games end this coming weekend. Was not that skier, Picabo Street, a great skier and ambassador for the United States? Then there was Jonny Moseley on the snow board. How about the girls hockey team which has not yet lost a game as of this writing? In the coming weeks these same type of wonderful American young people may be put in harms way as our President and military leaders defy the United Nations and declare war on Iraq.
