CYBERSPACE REPORT - #2

By Bill Weber

In our last report we talked primarily of where on the Internet to find
information on getting started using the Internet and "surfing the WEB"

A friend from Wilton, Anne Schulz, sent me the following e-mail:
"A girl could forget about cleaning house! I could surf all day!"
The Schulz family have just recently started "surfing" the WEB and like
so many of us are excited about what is out there and how easy it is to
find and use it.

E-MAIL
Perhaps, one of the greatest uses that has come out of this new media
is the use of Electronic Mail (e-mail) To those who have e-mail and
correspond with others who have the same it is a boom to cutting
the cost of long distant phone calls and paying 32 cents to send a
snail mail letter. Now one can send a message anywhere in the world via
e-mail for the cost of a local phone call. With unlimited Internet
service, $19.95 - $24.95 a month you can use the Internet as long
and as much as your eyes, seater and patience dictates. I have used
as much as 53 hours in one month but average about 30 hours. That is
about an hour a day at a cost about .68 cents a day. Not a bad
investment for what one gets.

So you ask, "How can I get this delightful and fast service?" If
you are already on the Internet your Internet Service Provider
generally
includes such service with your membership in AOL, CompuServe,
Prodigy or Century Internet or whoever is your provider.
Most e-mail messages can be written off line, and sent in a matter of
seconds. When they arrive at the recipients address they are stored in
their mail box until they access them. E-mail is usually delivered
within minutes after sending, although in far away places like Europe,
Asia and Africa it sometimes takes a bit longer.

Most e-mail servers provide a place to store (folders) of your incoming
mail after you have received and read it. There is also a reply button
that lets you reply and include the content of the received message or
parts thereof. Your address book holds the list of people you
correspond with and will put same in the e-mail message automatically at
the click or your mouse Also there is a delete button for unwanted
mail. Some e-mail providers give individual mail boxes to all members
of the family.

For those who would like to have additional e-mail providers for your
own or family use, there are a number of such providers out there that
will give you free service. Click on the following for a list of free
e-mail providers.
