"Helping people to help each other" is one of the reasons forour Midwest Computer Users Group", said Bill Kern who along with Don Lear were the original founders of the group.
"It was like so many people had good computers but they werehaving so much trouble getting the result they expected that oft timesthey were turning them in on another model and perhaps losing money in the deal because they did not know enough about them to get the full potential out of them", said Don Lear the other partner.
"We started meeting at the Sparta Library, then we met for awhile at Club 16 west of Sparta and now we meet here in the basement of the Century Telephone Company here in Sparta on the first Sunday evening of every month, unless it is a holiday in which case we meet the following Sunday night.", said Bill.
Bill Kern has a shop in the OUTBACK COMPANY (located in the former Hanson Clothing) in downtown Sparta where he assembles and repairs computers.
About fifteen of us were
present at the March 1st meeting that Thema and I attended. Don Lear
was in charge of the meeting and went over a number of latest reports on
new hardware, software, programs etc. He
also suggested that perhaps each month different members of the group
consent to giving their input on some subject of interest to the group.
Dorothy Prell, of Prell
Publishing, Sparta, spoke a bit about her publishing business, asking for
a few suggestions and help from the group. We had met her on several occasions
at the monthly poetry readings in Wilton, where she often read from
her book POEMS FROM FARMERS VALLEY.

Tom Lane had his computer
there and was busy showing those interested the techniques of putting up
a WEB pages. I did not get a chance to talk to him at the time but
an e-mail from him yesterday said:
Hi Bill,
Yes, I'm half of Tom and Laurie Lane. I don't play any real part in
the organization, if you mean the hierarchy, just a member for about a
year, or so. Don Lear started me going on web pages, and just like everything
I get interested in, I bury myself in it, at least for a while. My wife
has a friend who has a web site of monumental proportions, and he helped
me with questions in the early stages. I'm not an expert in this
stuff by any means, just a little crazy..

There were also a couple of people from Necedah, Pat Schmidt
who wanted more information on using the Internet and Dave Crist,
a teacher that was interested in WEB page construction.
It was a fun and interesting
evening and for all who have computers and would like to share problems
and solutions with one another here is that chance. Their meetings
are held monthly, in the basement of Century Telephone
