FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE,
submitted by Donna B.:
Re: New Local Group forming called: "Well Spouse Time Out"

Illness and accident attack without warning and can happen to any couple. Well Spouse Association is the only national organization focused exclusively on the needs of spouses caring for a chronically ill and/or disabled life partner. A local group is forming in the Monroe County area called Well Spouse Time Out. The first monthly meeting has been scheduled for Friday, Sept. 28th.

Frequently the spousal caregiver puts their own needs behind those of the ill partner, and over time this takes a toll on the caregiver. It is very hard for the Well Spouse to maintain that intense level of caregiving without also finding a way to take care of themselves as an individual. The emphasis of Well Spouse Time Out is on personal growth and renewal of enthusiasm for life. Rather than sob stories, laughter and smiles should be expected during Well Spouse Time Out meetings.

Meetings are the last Friday of every month from 11 am to 12:30 pm at the Tomah Memorial Hospital in meeting room A on the lower level. The local coordinator Donna B. can be contacted at WSAgroup@gmail.com or 608-487-5562. Volunteer respite care providers may be available, just call in advance for more information

Why Obama Won’t Take Hillary
Matthew Rothschild, May 8, 2008

Michelle would divorce him, for one thing. And for another, Clinton wouldn’t help the ticket. The Hillary camp is angling now for the VP slot, and some facile pundits are refrying the dream team cliché.

But don’t go out and buy an Obama/Clinton bumper sticker any time soon.

Here’s why Barack won’t take Hillary.

For one, they can’t stand each other, and neither can their staffs. Michelle probably would divorce Barack if he chose Hillary. Given how nasty the Clinton campaign has been toward Obama, it’s hard to see them making up.

And for two, Clinton wouldn’t help the ticket.

Her negatives are astronomical, and she’d galvanize the Republican rightwing, which isn’t exactly thrilled with McCain.

Any draw that she might have with independent women or moderate Republican women would be far outweighed by these factors.

And I don’t buy the idea that her appeal with white working class men, which she now brags about in a racist way, is bankable.

Here was her outrageous comment to USA Today:

"I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on," she said citing an article that she said “found how Sen. Obama's support among hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me."

Hard-working Americans and white Americans are an identical set?

Black Americans aren’t hardworking?

That’s not going to endear her to Obama, either.

And, anyway, if the goal is to appeal to the white working class, Obama can do that better by choosing someone like Senator Jim Webb of Virginia or Governor Rendell of Pennsylvania or Governor Ted Strickland of Ohio or even John Edwards.

And if the goal is to appeal to Latinos, there’s Bill Richardson, who has a ton of experience, to boot.

While I’m at it, if experience is the main criterion, there’s always Al Gore.

Hillary Clinton is losing the Presidential race, and she’ll lose the Vice Presidential one, too.

Relax your mind and humble your heart to focus on Christ.. Allow God to be the only person on your mind while you read this prayer. If we can take the time to read long jokes, stories, etc., we should give the same respect to this prayer. Friends, who pray together, stay together. If you pray this prayer, please change the number in the subject box before forwarding the message so people can SEE how many people have done so.

Dear Lord, I thank you for this day. I thank You for my being able to see and to hear this morning. I'm blessed because You are a forgiving God and an understanding God. You have done so much for me and You keep on blessing me. Forgive me this day for everything I have done, said or thought that was not pleasing to you. I ask now for Your forgiveness.

Please keep me safe from all danger and harm. Help me to start this day with a new attitude and plenty of gratitude Let me make the best of each and every day to clear my mind so that I can hear from You.

Please broaden my mind that I can accept all things.

Let me not whine and whimper over things I have no control over. Let me continue to see sin through God's eyes and acknowledge it as evil. And when I sin, let me repent, and confess with my mouth my wrongdoing, and receive the forgiveness of God.

And when this world closes in on me, let me remember Jesus' example -- to slip away and find a quiet place to pray. It's the best response when I'm pushed beyond my limits. I know that when I can't pray, You listen to my heart. Continue to use me to do Your will.

Continue to bless me that I may be a blessing to others. Keep me strong that I may help the weak. Keep me uplifted that I may have words of encouragement for others. I pray for those who are lost and can't find their way. I pray for those who are misjudged and misunderstood. I pray for those who don't know You intimately. I pray for those who will delete this without sharing it with others.. I pray for those who don't believe. But I thank you that I believe.

I believe that God changes people and God changes things. I pray for all my sisters and brothers. For each and every family member in their households.. I pray for peace, love and joy in their homes that they are out of debt and all their needs are met.

I pray that every eye that reads this knows there is no problem, circumstance, or situation greater than God. Every battle is in Your hands for You to fight. I pray that these words be received into the hearts of every eye that sees them and every mouth that confesses them willingly.

This is my prayer. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Pass this message to 8 people except you and me. Don't ignore and God will bless you. Know that you are already blessed by the person who sent this to you.

The Obituary Below Is a Friend Of Ours and Played A Large Part

This Is Primarily To Inform Them Of His Death.

    *******************************************************

    TED LEWIS, 88, WEBSTER, MO.
Passed away on Nov 20, 2007

TedTord P. Lewis, a lifelong resident of Webster Groves, passed from this world on November 20. He was 88 years old. He lived life fully and died gracefully with family gathered and holding himin the light as he journeyed onward.

Tedford was a lover of humanity and a world traveler. He took great pleasure in life?s simple beauties, thrived on problem solving, and found joy in his many roles as husband, father, businessman, laborer, and fearless fighter for peace and justice.

A conscientious objector in WWII, Tedford performed alternative service as a smokejumper in Montana. He taught at the American University of Beirut from 1947-48, traveling extensively in the Middle East and Balkans before returning home to Webster, where he started a construction business. He married Margaret Warner in 1952, beginning 55 years of loving companionship and a family of five children.

Tedford and Margaret were leaders in local chapters of international peace organizations, including the American Friends Service Committee, War Resisters League, and Fellowship of Reconciliation. They have been active members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

Tedford was a self-made man who used his business success to support his beliefs. He was a founder of the World Community Center and lent generous support to causes that helped refugees and disadvantaged people. Tedford was a member of the Business Executives Move for Peace in Vietnam, and a leader in the movement that ended that war. He continued nonviolent opposition to America?s wars of empire until the end of his life.

His memory is cherished by his wife, Margaret; children, Stephen, Lannie, Tedford Jr, Chris and Erica, and five grandchildren. We are inspired to continue his work for a better world.

A memorial celebration will be held at 2 pm, Sunday, November 25, at the St. Louis Society of Friends Meeting House, 1001 Park Avenue, 63104.

In memory of Tedford, donations may be made to the Friends Committee on National Legislation, 245 Second St. NE, Washington, D.C. 20002-5795.? www.fcnl.org

The following is to tell you readers who we were back in 1941-1945.

42,000 of us American men were classified as conscientious objectors during World War II and did “alternative service” at Civilian Peace Service camps run by the “Historic Peace Churches,” i.e., the Mennonites, Friends/Quakers, and the Church of the Brethren. Another 25, 000 became “non-combat conscientious objectors,” that is, they did not object to military service, merely to killing. The Non-Combatatant COs became ambulance drivers and medics during the war–often working to save the lives of “the enemy” as well. Others, who objected to cooperating with Selective Service (coerced military service) at all, went to prison for the duration of the war.

The film points out that America has always had COs–George Washington specifically exempted those “of tender conscience” from induction into the Continental Army. Most Mennonite, Amish, and Brethren/Dunker folk who immigrated to the U.S. did so to escape compulsory military service in Europe. So did many Jews. American history is littered with utopian experimental communities–and often these included a commitment to peace and nonviolence. But, until WWII, if one was a pacifist or conscientious objector in America, one was usually given only a few options: Violate one’s conscience by allowing one’s self to be drafted; pay for another to go in one’s place (an option given up until the Civil War); flee to avoid service (draft dodging); or prison. Thousands of COs went to prison during the first World War.

During WWII, some, like the Union 8, eight students at Union Theological Seminary of New York, still went to prison rather than even register for the draft. (I have met one of them, George Houser, who went on to help found the Congress on Racial Equality[CORE], the American Committee on Africa, and has been a leader in many nonviolent social movements.) Others volunteered to be “human guinea pigs” or “human lab rats” for medical experimentation–experiments that would never be approved by any hospital ethics committee, today, but which helped find cures for diseases and helped keep many civilians in post-war Europe from starving. My teacher, Glen Stassen, has talked about a high school teacher of his, a Quaker, who had weird growths on his body because he had been such a “human guinea pig” during WWII.

Others volunteered to work in mental hospitals. We still have a long way to go in the treatment of the mentally ill, but before this service, “hospitals” for the mentally ill were nightmarish places of torture and torment. The work of WWII COs (and many of their wives, too) transformed these places and changed the way that Americans thought about mental illness.

As one of the witnesses in the film (Sam Yoder) said, being in a Conscientious Objector during World War II was especially hard because everyone agreed that Hitler had to be stopped and no one, including pacifists, had any answer of how to do so without war. Of course, as another witness pointed out, pacifists and COs had warned about the harsh Treaty of Versailles (which ended WWI) sowing the seeds for another war.

Gandhian techniques for active nonviolence were in their infancy (Dietrich Bonhoeffer tried repeatedly to get to visit Gandhi–What would the German Confessing Church movement have looked like if armed with Gandhian nonviolence?). And, even today, there is no guarantee that nonviolent campaigns will be successful: We have many recent successes from the overthrow of Milosevic in the former Yugoslavia (2001), to the Orange Revolution in the Ukraine (2003), but success seems much further away in Burma (Myanmar). And nonviolent 3rd Party intervention, as an alternative to war, did not really begin until the 1970s and is today embodied in such organizations as Witness for Peace, Peace Brigades International, Christian Peacemaker Teams, Friends Peace Teams, Holy Land Trust, Nonviolence International, and the Nonviolent Peace Force. None of those options existed in WWII. There were amazing efforts using active nonviolence to rescue some Jews from the Holocaust (most famously in the village of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon in Vichy France), but those efforts weren’t available to AMERICAN pacifists.

Therefore, it was incredibly difficult to remain true to beliefs that taking human life was always wrong, in the face of the monstrous evil of the Axis onslaught–and in the face of constant propaganda which equated pacifism with cowardice. The COs worked to demonstrate that they were not cowards and to sow the seeds for justice and peace in the future. Many of them helped to launch the post-war Civil Rights movement. As U.S. troops came home from battle, many COs replaced them (especially in Europe, less in the Pacific islands or in Japan), working tirelessly to help in post-war recovery, feeding and clothing civilians.

There were no ticker tape parades for the homecoming COs and some, who felt they had done make work in place of work of significance, went into depression and seldom spoke about their experiences.

But we should never doubt their courage: the courage to go against popular sentiment, to swim against the tide, to suffer for one’s beliefs–even the courage to face war unarmed (as with the ambulance drivers and other noncombatant COs), but never to kill.

It still takes courage to be a CO today, even with more options available and a supposedly “all volunteer” military. Many countries still have no CO exemptions for compulsory military service and being a pacifist exacts a high cost. Even where alternative service exists, so that COs are able to avoid prison, in many countries they are permanently banned from certain occupations or even entrance to university.

The question often posed to us pacifists, “What would you have done about Hitler?” is hypothetical if we were born later. But this movie is a moving description of what some pacifists DID when they refused to kill.

    Michael,

This kinda relates to your post. We covered the Supreme Court cases dealing with conscientious objectors this week in class.

Since we now have a volunteer armed forces, I was curious…what happens to say a marine who willingly enlists and during his term of duty becomes a pacifist? Does that marine apply for objector status and get reassigned to a different job until his term expires? Or how does that work considering we’re at war? I assume there have been at least a handful of such examples in recent years?

Comment by Big Daddy Weave | October 5, 2007

Hi, Big Daddy: I can speak to this out of personal experience. I became a pacifist while enlisted in the U.S. Army (was that really over 20 years ago, now?). I applied for a C.O. discharge and refused to continue wearing my uniform or picking up a weapon. They threatened me with prison in Ft. Leavenworth, KS. They tried to get the chaplain to talk me out of my beliefs. The National Interreligious Service Board for Conscientious Objectors (NISBCO), which is now called the Center for Conscience and War, sent me a lawyer and, after much more struggle, I was granted an honorable discharge as a C.O.

In war time, it is harder. Many COs during the 1st Gulf War were imprisoned–some were ordered to the front lines without weapons (which is illegal, btw). In this war, much fewer CO discharges have been allowed. Many COs have been given prison sentences. Some of these have made headlines.

During WWII, nearly every U.S. denomination stood up for the rights of COs, even the Southern Baptist Convention. Although VERY FEW Southern Baptists applied for CO status, the Convention worked to protect their liberty of conscience. But in this war, Richard Land has called them cowards and the SBC has done NOTHING for COs–except insult their courage, deny that they are really saved, etc. Legally, someone is allowed to become a pacifist and CO at any time. Practically, during war the burden of proof is on the CO to show they aren’t just cowards trying to avoid pain and death.

On the legal aspects of conscientious objection in the U.S., go to the website of the Center for Conscience and War and read everything you need to know.

    Comment by Michael Westmoreland-White | October 5, 2007

    Michael,

Have you ever read “The Things they Carried”? I forget who wrote it, but it was about a guy who had moral problems with the Vietnam War (nothing astounding, I know). It’s a bunch of random stories, but there is a particular one I remember in which this guy had the moral dilemma of staying in Canada (dodging his draft) or going to fight in the war. I think you would appreciate it if you have not read it. My pacifist English teacher had us read it in college. Well, maybe not completely pacifist, he did support WWII because it was “the use of violence to eliminate a greater violence” as he would say.

Section 1: Civilian Public Service Administrative Files, 1940-1946

Introduction to Collection The Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 provided for alternative service for conscientious objectors who were assigned "work of national importance under civilian direction." Led by the historic peace churches (the Church of the Brethren, Religious Society of Friends, and Mennonite Church), many churches joined together in 1940 to form the National Service Board for Religious Objectors (NSBRO), which coordinated the civilian public service program. The AFSC was responsible for the administration of seventeen CPS camps and over thirty special service units which provided an alternative service program for 3400 men between 1941-1946.

Fully-outfitted smokejumpers boarding an aircraft in Missoula, Montana enroute to a fire in the Idaho Panhandle, July 1994A smokejumper is a wildland firefighter that parachutes into a remote area to combat wildfires.

Smokejumpers are most often deployed to fires that are extremely remote. The extra risk associated with this method is justified by reaching a wildfire shortly after ignition when it is still relatively small. Another argument for delivering wildland firefighters by parachute is that the fixed-wing aircraft that carry smokejumpers are cheaper to operate over long distances, carry more personnel and equipment and have higher top speeds than the helicopters often used for other fire deployments. While remoteness is one reason parachute deployment is used, it adds to the risk inherent in smokejumping as crews are often hours away from help if the wind shifts or someone gets injured. The ordinary risk of a parachute jump, the adverse conditions for the jump, and the lack of resources for firefighting and rescue once on the ground in a remote area gives smokejumping a reputation as exceedingly dangerous work.

The First Thanksgiving The first American Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621, to commemorate the harvest reaped by the Plymouth Colony after a harsh winter. In that year Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving. The colonists celebrated it as a traditional English harvest feast, to which they invited the local Wampanoag Indians. Days of thanksgiving were celebrated throughout the colonies after fall harvests. All thirteen colonies did not, however, celebrate Thanksgiving at the same time until October 1777. George Washington was the first president to declare the holiday, in 1789. A New National Holiday By the mid–1800s, many states observed a Thanksgiving holiday. Meanwhile, the poet and editor Sarah J. Hale had begun lobbying for a national Thanksgiving holiday. During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, looking for ways to unite the nation, discussed the subject with Hale. In 1863 he gave his Thanksgiving Proclamation, declaring the last Thursday in November a day of thanksgiving. In 1939, 1940, and 1941 Franklin D. Roosevelt, seeking to lengthen the Christmas shopping season, proclaimed Thanksgiving the third Thursday in November. Controversy followed, and Congress passed a joint resolution in 1941 decreeing that Thanksgiving should fall on the fourth Thursday of November, where it remains. *******************************************************

    Something To Challenge Our Thinking
AboutThis Planet That We Live On. ClickHere

The Pale Blue Dot is a photograph of planet Earth made by Voyager 1 from a record distance, showing it against the vastness of space. It is also the title of a 1994 book by astronomer Carl Sagan that was inspired by the photo. In 2001, it was selected by space.com as one of the top ten space science photos.[ "We succeeded in taking that picture, and, if you look at it, you see a dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you know, everyone you love, everyone you've ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of all our joys and sufferings, thousands of confident religions, ideologies and economic doctrines. Every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilizations, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every hopeful child, every mother and father, every inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader, every saint and sinner in the history of our species, lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light.

Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity -- in all this vastness -- there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us. It's been said that astronomy is a humbling, and I might add, a character-building experience. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish this pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

The MCAREA Executive Board and Planning Committee met Aug. 8, 2007 at the home of Shirley Neurohr to plan programs, speakers, meeting times, and to assign servers for our 2007-2008 meetings. We used input from our May meeting to accomplish this task. In May, our members brainstormed ideas for programs and meetings for the upcoming year.

Our first meeting this fall will be held on Monday, Sept. 17th at 12:00 PM at the F&M Bank Meeting Room. This is a change from the date stated in our June, 2007 minutes. A luncheon will be served by the Executive Board and Planning Committee. Following the luncheon, special guest Mary Ellen Justinger, Tomah School Board member, will discuss issues and challenges facing our schools. After the speaker, our business meeting will follow. A proposal to increase local dues to $10.00 will be discussed and voted on by members.

The October meeting will be held at The Cranberry Discovery Center, Warrens, at 1:30 PM. We will tour the Center and have cranberry ice cream. The cost will be $5.50. Aleda Moseley will give us more details at our September meeting.

Censuring the President, Vice President, and Other Administration Officials
This Administration has led an assault on the rule of law and misled our nation into a war with Iraq and must be held accountable.

That is why I am introducing two censure resolutions condemning the President, Vice President and others within the administration.

For more details, watch my appearance on NBC's Meet the Press , watch or read my questioning of Attorney General Gonzales, or read my blog about the censure resolutions I plan to offer.

I have heard from many people in my home state of Wisconsin as well as from across the country about the need for accountability. CNN: TSA KNW "DRY RUN" TERROR ALERTS WERE BOGUS
    David Edwards and Nick Juliano
    Published: Friday July 27th, 2007.

The Transportation Security Agency's national security bulletin issued was based on bogus examples that were combined to give the impression of ominous terrorist plotting, CNN reports.

"That bulletin for law enforcement eyes only told of suspicious items recently found in passenger's bags at airport checkpoints, warned that they may signify dry runs for terrorist attacks," CNN's Brian Todd reported Friday afternoon. "Well it turns out none of that is true."

Todd highlights the case of Sara Weiss, who was detained in San Diego after two ice packs covered in tape were found in her baggage. Weiss, who works for a faith-based organization, also was carrying a survey about Muslim Americans, which CNN says also raised law enforcement provisions.

"The FBI now says there were valid explanations for all four incidents in that bulletin, and a US government official says no charges will be brought in any of these cases," Todd reported.

Weiss says she was held for three hours and questioned by San Diego Harbor Police and two other men who did not identify themselves. She told CNN one of the men asked her if she knew Osama bin Laden, which she described as "a ridiculous question."

The FBI maintained "they were right" putting the bogus reports on the TSA bulletin, which is distributed to law enforcement agencies nationwide, Todd reported. Airport security officers must be trained in identifying suspicious packages, even when those packages turn out to be innocuous.

E-MAIL FROM OUR GRANDSON IN UGANDA
Elliot Is In Center 2nd Row From Back

Hey all, Just thought I'd let you know how things are going.

Work is going well. We have started to meet with different groups throughout the community. A few of the groups did not show up fro the meetings they scheduled. We even had a week where no one showed up for a meeting the entire week. It's hard to help people when they lack the commitment to even show up at a meeting. The groups we have met with shared with us their activities and challenges. There are skills we can help them with, but they need to put forth the effort and make some changes. A lot of the work feels like motivational speaking. I haven't told the people about living in a van down by the river yet. A lot of times they expect someone else to solve their problems. It can be frustrating because there are opportunities for these people to be successful but they just aren't taking the initiative. Those are the times where I have to step back, put things into perspective, and think how easy it is for me to say that with my comfortable home and affluent lifestyle. I may be only a volunteer and make $250 a month but that's almost equivalent of an Ugandan doctor's salary and twice the amount of a headmaster of a school who has worked for 15 years. Recently, I have been working with my organization to build commitment among the groups and help them find a more effective structure. It's been kind of slow because groups not showing up to meetings and both my counterpart and supervisor were sick with malaria and other assorted illnesses.

My health has been great. But of course all of that can change in a moment. The worst would probably be a slightly sore throat and mild fatigue. i wouldn't even call that being sick. But of course I called the Peace Corps Nurse to make sure it wasn't anything serious. Why not, its what they are here for and I was a little bored and felt like talking to someone. i have been getting a lot of exercise carrying two 20L Jerry cans full of water from the borehole to my house and I have been riding my bike everywhere. Its about 5-10km a day, but can get up to 20-30km.

I bought an American bicycle (24speed Giant) in Kampala. It a little used and needs some tuning, but its the SUV of bicycles here compared to the Hero bicycle ( www.herocycles.com ) that is sold everywhere in Uganda. The only reason this company is still in business is because they made a deal with the president of Uganda to only sell Hero Bicycles. They are constantly broken from the time they are made. My advice: don't buy one. I have the usual scrapes and bumps from my bicycle and have only gone over the handlebars once. I did manage to hit and kill a chicken with my bike. I wasn't my fault the chicken swerved right under my tire. I talked to the owners, who were sitting outside and saw the whole thing happen, and apologized. All is forgiven and they ended up eating the chicken.

The food has been great. That is the American food that i cook for myself, not the Ugandan Mtooke. Since I cannot watch TV, cooking becomes the nights activity and I've surprised myself at how well I can cook. This isn't to say that I will not return to eating frozen pizza when I get back to the US. That sounds really good right now. I get a lot of fresh fruit and veggies given to me by my organization, such as mangoes, papaya, lemons, oranges, guava, bananas, peppers, corn and avocados. It's a challenge eating it all before it spoils. I also get a cup and a half fresh milk every day from my org. I might try to make my own cheese eventually.

I've been visiting other Peace Corps Volunteers and have been having a great time. We went to Sipi Falls a few weeks ago and have an All-Volunteer Conference coming up. After that we will be Whitewater rafting at Bujagali Falls on the Nile River. It has class 5 rapids and is supposed to be some of the best rafting in the world. Attached is a picture of our group from the swearing in ceremony at the US ambassador's house.

Packages... Keep them coming I appreciate them a lot and they make even the worst days better. Here's the short list:

  • Pictures
  • Reading materials (books, magazines, newspapers, etc)
  • Chocolate
  • cheese (mac and cheese packets are the best since i can use them when cooking)
  • spices (all kinds, mixed spices are ok individual ones are better for me to learn how to cook)

    Address:

  • Elliot Weber, PCV
  • Peace Corps
  • PO Box 29348
  • Kampala, Uganda

I miss you all and would love to hear what you are up to.

  • Take care,
    Elliot

Quote of the Week: Colin Powell Calls for Closing Guantanamo
"If it was up to me, I would close Guantanamo not tomorrow, but this afternoon. I’d close it. And I would not let any of those people go. I would simply move them to the United States and put them into our federal legal system...And so I would get rid of Guantanamo and I’d get rid of the military commission system and use established procedures in federal law or in the manual for courts-martial." ~ Former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

This E-mail From My Grandson Joe Lynch.

    WORLD AS I SEE IT.
    By Albert Einstein.

The World As I See It," was shortened for our Web exhibit..
"How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people -- first of all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness is wholly dependent, and then for the many, unknown to us, to whose destinies we are bound by the ties of sympathy. A hundred times every day I remind myself that my inner and outer life are based on the labors of other men, living and dead, and that I must exert myself in order to give in the same measure as I have received and am still receiving...

"I have never looked upon ease and happiness as ends in themselves -- this critical basis I call the ideal of a pigsty. The ideals that have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth. Without the sense of kinship with men of like mind, without the occupation with the objective world, the eternally unattainable in the field of art and scientific endeavors, life would have seemed empty to me. The trite objects of human efforts -- possessions, outward success, luxury -- have always seemed to me contemptible.

"My passionate sense of social justice and social responsibility has always contrasted oddly with my pronounced lack of need for direct contact with other human beings and human communities. I am truly a 'lone traveler' and have never belonged to my country, my home, my friends, or even my immediate family, with my whole heart; in the face of all these ties, I have never lost a sense of distance and a need for solitude..."

"My political ideal is democracy. Let every man be respected as an individual and no man idolized. It is an irony of fate that I myself have been the recipient of excessive admiration and reverence from my fellow-beings, through no fault, and no merit, of my own. The cause of this may well be the desire, unattainable for many, to understand the few ideas to which I have with my feeble powers attained through ceaseless struggle. I am quite aware that for any organization to reach its goals, one man must do the thinking and directing and generally bear the responsibility. But the led must not be coerced, they must be able to choose their leader. In my opinion, an autocratic system of coercion soon degenerates; force attracts men of low morality... The really valuable thing in the pageant of human life seems to me not the political state, but the creative, sentient individual, the personality; it alone creates the noble and the sublime, while the herd as such remains dull in thought and dull in feeling.

"This topic brings me to that worst outcrop of herd life, the military system, which I abhor... This plague-spot of civilization ought to be abolished with all possible speed. Heroism on command, senseless violence, and all the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism -- how passionately I hate them!

"The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are dimmed. It was the experience of mystery -- even if mixed with fear -- that engendered religion. A knowledge of the existence of something we cannot penetrate, our perceptions of the profoundest reason and the most radiant beauty, which only in their most primitive forms are accessible to our minds: it is this knowledge and this emotion that constitute true religiosity. In this sense, and only this sense, I am a deeply religious man... I am satisfied with the mystery of life's eternity and with a knowledge, a sense, of the marvelous structure of existence -- as well as the humble attempt to understand even a tiny portion of the Reason that manifests itself in nature."

WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO OUR COUNTRY?
    From Don Wedin
    A Very Thought Provoking Article

We have a National Government that is not responding to the wishes of the public. It has taken on a life of its own and become a law upon itself. Constitutional law is being ignored and disrespected. It seems reasonable to look for reasons.

President Bush is a problem but he seems to be just a pawn in a larger picture; all of Congress is acting strangely. Something is terribly wrong and raises questions like, “Why does Congress permit him to continue sacrificing our young men and women in a war based on a lie and that is, admittedly, not winnable”? We are creating enemies and terrorists where none existed before. Not long ago we were considered a valued customer for Iraqi oil and respected as a powerful nation--how could we possibly do so many things wrong? Could it be on purpose?

What happens to countries that loose a war? Political bodies of the conquered people are forced to conform to the wishes of the new “owners”. News and Information is slanted to reflect favorably on the victors. Arts and entertainment is tailored to shape the attitudes and placate the public. Educational institutions are staffed with new masters; and so it is said, “history is written by the victors”. After a war things are never the same.

Historically, of course, nations are invaded and conquered by military force but is that the only way it could happen? What if a group of people, Jews, for example, although small in numbers but cohesive and ambitious, decided they wanted to rule, could they take over with a “bloodless coup”?

Could that happen, here in America, where we have a democracy with “majority rule” and our fabled “vote”?

Could they have the resources to manipulate members of Congress and neutralize our vote? What if that has already been done with a “carrot and stick” approach that assures compliant legislators of re-election support and withholds it from those failing to go along?

Could that account for so many powerful and apparently unbeatable incumbents in Congress?

Could there be a disproportionate number of ethnic Jews in Congress?

Could they have controlling ownership and thus the power to influence the content of newspapers, printed news, television news, and entertainment media; could they spin and fabricate facts and information, could they mold our minds and attitudes--could they, too, re-write history?

Could they have the cohesive element inherent in an extended family and with it the advantage of nepotism; could they “leap frog” their people to head the offices of government agencies and institutions, the book publishing companies, educational institutions and the like?

Could they create a “closed shop” environment operating to the advantage of members to the disadvantage of non-members, as in some trade groups?

Could this have already occurred and we choose not to see it--or, worse, we see it but pretend not to?

Our country has made some bad mistakes since WWII but the biggest, in my opinion, is financing the state of Israel. As the result of supporting Israeli aggression in Palestine we are, by association, despised and hated, embroiled in an un-winnable war in the Middle East; we have made enemies of once good trading partners, sacrificed a lot of good young men, destroyed the good will we once enjoyed throughout the world, destroyed our economy and weakened ourselves militarily. What have we done to deserve leadership like that?

To answer, in advance, the probable charge of just being an “anti-Semite”, which I am not, I consider myself to be an objective, free-thinking and concerned American, not “anti” anything; The evidence, both factual and circumstantial, speaks for itself.

    Donald Wedin

Jan Schakowsky (D., Ill.) of the House Intelligence Committee estimates that 40 cents of every dollar spent on the occupation has gone to war contractors. It is unlikely that any of these corporations will push for an early withdrawal. The profits are too lucrative

    Book Description
Meet BLACKWATER USA, the world's most secretive and powerful mercenary firm. Based in the wilderness of North Carolina, it is the fastest-growing private army on the planet with forces capable of carrying out regime change throughout the world. Blackwater protects the top US officials in Iraq and yet we know almost nothing about the firm's quasi-military operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and inside the US. Blackwater was founded by an extreme right-wing fundamentalist Christian mega-millionaire ex- Navy Seal named Erik Prince, the scion of a wealthy conservative family that bankrolls far-right-wing causes. Blackwater is the dark story of the rise of a powerful mercenary army, ranging from the blood-soaked streets of Fallujah to rooftop firefights in Najaf to the hurricane-ravaged US gulf to Washington DC, where Blackwater executives are hailed as new heroes in the war on terror. This is an extraordinary exposé by one of America's most exciting young radical journalists.

Gov. Doyle makes State of State Speech

Doyle proposes tax cuts to soften economic blows
    David Callender — 1/23/2008 7:07 pm

In his sixth annual State of the State speech tonight, Gov. Jim Doyle warned that the nation's economic woes may come home to Wisconsin and pressed for his own package of tax cuts, expanded insurance coverage, and other pro-business measures.

"Make no mistake, challenging days are ahead," Doyle told lawmakers from both houses of the Legislature, members of the Supreme Court, and other elected officials. "Our nation finds itself at a time of great uncertainty. America's economy is in deep turmoil. In just the last few days, markets around the world have plummeted and talk in Washington has turned from recovery to recession," he said. But, he added, "when challenges arise, we meet them head on."

Doyle, a Democrat, blamed many of the nation's woes on what he called "years of bad decision-making in Washington," a theme he first sounded when he ran for re-election in 2006 against U.S. Rep. Mark Green, a Republican.

Doyle called for the creation of an Energy Independence Fund, setting aside $150 million over the next 10 years, which he said would promote the development of alternative fuel sources and new energy technologies.

"From manufacturing wind turbines and solar panels to retrofitting fuel pumps and exploring the latest clean technologies, we will seize green opportunities and create good jobs for our citizens," he said.

Doyle also called for a separate Renewable Fuel Initiative, which would provide tax credits and other incentives and "add 400 new renewable fuel pumps to our roads."

Doyle also gave more details about his proposal to make low-cost health insurance available to more Wisconsin residents through a variety of insurance plans. The proposal, dubbed BadgerChoice, would create a toll-free number and a Web site that would allow employees to choose from "a dozen private plans - applying their employer contribution to the one that works best for them."

Doyle said the plan would establish a new "community rating system" to evaluate those proposals, which he said would "inject real stability and fairness - ensuring that all of us share the risk."

Doyle also reiterated his support for a statewide smoking ban, which he proposed in his budget last year but was rejected by lawmakers, as well as increased pay for outstanding teachers and insurance coverage for families with autistic children.

30 Comments American Oil companies offered five million dollars to
each Iraqi MP to pass the Oil law
Reported today on Akhbar Alkhaleej newspaper

An Iraqi MP preferred to remain anonymous told the newspaper that highly confidential negotiations took place by representatives from American oil companies, offering $5 million to each MP who votes in favor of the Oil and Gas law.

The amount that could be paid to pass the votes do not exceed $150 million dollars in the case of $5 million to each MP, pointing out that the Oil law requires 138 votes to pass, which the Americans want to guarantee in many ways, including vote-buying, intimidation and threats!

Focusing on the heads of parliamentary blocs and influential figures in the parliament to ensure the votes, the Americans guaranteed the Kurdish votes in advance but they are seeking enough votes to pass and approve the law as soon as possible. January 28th 2008 Tags: IRAQ| PALESTINE| US| USA

    NICE ONE FOR A CHANGE.

Give this heart to everyone you don't want to lose in '08 including me if you care.

Try to collect 12, it's not easy!

'Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle

A sharp tongue can cut my own throat.

If I want my dreams to come true, I mustn't oversleep.

Of all the things I wear, my expression is the most important.

The best vitamin for making friends.... B1.

The happiness of my life depends on the quality of my thoughts.

The heaviest thing I can carry is a grudge.

One thing I can give and still keep...is my word.

I lie the loudest when I lie to myself.

If I lack the courage to start, I have already finished. One thing I can't recycle is wasted time.

    Ideas won't work unless ' I ' do.

My mind is like a parachute...it functions only when open.

The 10 commandments are not a multiple choice.

The pursuit of happiness is the chase of a lifetime! It is never too late to become what I might have been.

Friends are like balloons; once you let them go, you might not get them back. Sometimes we get so busy with our own lives and problems that we may not even notice that we've let them fly away. Sometimes we are so caught up in who's right and who's wrong that we forget what's right a nd wrong.

Sometimes we just don't realize what real friendship means until it is too late. I don't want to let that happen so I'm gonna tie you to my heart so I never lose you.

Carter Defends Plan To Meet Hamas
    Despite Israel Criticism
Click Here p> Carter To Meet Hamas Leader: Jazeera

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter plans to meet Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal in Syria next week, despite U.S. efforts to isolate the Islamist Palestinian group, Al Jazeera television said.

The meeting was expected to take place in the Syrian capital Damascus on April 18, and may also include former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and former South African President Nelson Mandela.

"Senior Hamas officials have confirmed the Carter meeting but declined to speak on camera out of both political and security considerations," Al Jazeera said on Thursday.

Washington shuns Hamas as a terrorist group and has joined Israel in supporting efforts to isolate it.

Hamas seized control of the Gaza Strip in June. That left the West Bank under the control of the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority, which dismissed a Hamas-led government.

Carter, 83, served one term as president between 1977 and 1981. After leaving office he founded the Carter Center in Atlanta to promote global peace, health, democracy and human rights. In 2002, he won the Nobel Peace Prize.
